ACADEMIC CALENDAR FOR THE YEAR 2006 - 07

ACADAMIC COMMITTEE

An Academic Committee actively functions in the college to internalise and institutionalise excellence in all disciplines. The committee consists of the Principal as Chairman, a teacher-convener, elected representatives of the teaching staff to the College Council and the Heads of Departments. The Academic Committee prepares the academic calendar and supervises the day-to-day academic functions of the collegec. It also monitors termwise completion of syllabus in every discipline.

The college Academic Committee streamlines and synthesizes systematically the functioning , the overall development and the data collection for total academic planning. The committee meets at least once in every term to scrutinize and examine the academic activities and to carry out the concomitant monitoring of the system. The tentative dates for submission of teaching plan, assignments, seminars, test papers, interdisciplinary seminars, midterm examination, model examination, class wise PTA meeting etc are included in academic calendar.

MORNING PRAYERS AND CLASS HOURS
Before the comencement of classes in the morning, the ‘Daiva Dasakam’(prayer of humanity) is played on the public address system. Staff and students stand in reverential silence during its soothing and melodious rendering.
The college works under the full day system with two sessions. In between the two sessions there will be a noon interval of forty five minutes from 1 pm to 1.45 pm. Besides lecture classes, there will be Seminars, Tutorials, Group discussions and Counselling.

ATTENDANCE
1 The teacher will mark attendance at the beginning of the period.
2 A student who is not in the class when the attendance is taken shall be marked absent.
3 A teacher shall however mark a student coming late present after dealing with him/her as he/she thinks fit.
4 At the end of each term or at the beginning of the following term, a list will be put up on the general Notice Board, showing the number of days of attendance lost by each student till then.
5 Absence from class for an hour will be considered as absence for the concerned session.
6 The Annual Certificate for Attendance and Progress required for promotion and for admission to the University Examination will not be granted unless-
a. The student has atleast 75% of the attendance prescribed by the University
for the course.
b. The student has completed the course of instruction to the satisfaction of
the authorities.
c. His/her progress in studies and conduct has been satisfactory.
7 Students whose attendance falls below the prescribed minimum shall apply for exemption through the Principal. The application in the prescribed form shall be accompanied by a chalan receipt for Rs.50/- upto 20 days and Rs.30/- upto 10 days. Exemption will not be granted by the University, if the shortage of attendance exceeds 22 days. No exemption will be granted more than once during a course. No application for exemption will be recommended more than once during a course. No application for exemption will be recomended by the Principal unless he/she is satisfied that the shortage of attendance was due to a cause beyond the students control. Ordinarily, long continued illness will be accepted as a plea for shortage of attendance. Absence without leave application will not be condoned under any circumstances.

TUTORIAL SYSTEM
With a view to comprehensively improving the all-round performance of the student and providing greater opportunities for personal rapport between the teacher and the taught, the tutorial system has been introduced. Students of the college will be grouped into batches of about twentyfive and each group will be under the charge of a member of the staff, designed as “Group Tutor”. Each group tutor will regularly advice them on avenues of academic improvement.
Leave of absence of students will be granted only if the application is recommended and forwarded by the Group Tutor. No Conduct Certificate will ordinarily be issued to a student except on the recommendation of the group Tutor. The college level convenor of the Tutorial system is Smt E. Padmakumari
